Z – Shark Scientific Name
The dispute over what to call zebra sharks in the scientific community is akin to the one over whether or not good beer would fill you up. Stegostoma fasciatum is the preferred choice of most researchers. But there’s also the argument that Stegostoma varium is the superior option. A 2019 taxonomic study added confusion by deciding that Stegostoma tigrinum is the proper name for this species.
The portmanteau term “stoma” comes from the two Greek words “stego” and “stoma,” which mean “covered” and “mouth,” respectively. Also originating in Greek, fasciatum means “banded,” alluding to the distinctive pattern of stripes on newborn zebra sharks.
Appearance
The zebra shark is characterized by a cylindrical body that can twist and twirl like an acrobat, a flat head with tiny eyes on each side, and a short snout mouth crammed with 50 to 65 teeth. The average adult is around 2.5 meters (8.2 feet) long, whereas the world record-holder is a whopping 3.5 meters (11 feet) long. That’s almost twice as tall as actor Danny Devito!
Zebra sharks are born with a dark brown dorsal fin, a yellowish belly, and yellow vertical stripes. The spots form from the stripes as they develop. Researchers in the marine life field think the infants can hide in the stripes.
